Obscuration of Active Galactic Nuclei by Circumnuclear Starbursts

چکیده
We examine the possibility of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) obscuration by dusty gas clouds that spurt out from circumnuclear starburst regions. For the purpose, the dynamical evolution of gas clouds is pursued, including the effects of radiation forces by an AGN as well as a starburst. Here, we solve the radiative transfer equations for clouds, taking into consideration the growth of clouds by inelastic cloud-cloud collisions and the resultant change in optical depth. As a result, it is shown that if the starburst is more luminous than the AGN, gas clouds are distributed extensively above a galactic disk with the assistance of radiation pressure from the starburst. The total covering factor of gas clouds reaches a maximum of around 20%. After several 10yr, gas clouds with larger optical depth form by cloud-cloud collisions and thereafter the clouds fall back due to weakened radiation pressure. The larger clouds undergo runaway growth and are eventually distributed around the equatorial plane on the inner sides of circumnuclear starburst regions. These clouds have an optical depth of several tens. The result is qualitatively consistent with the putative tendency that Seyfert 2 galaxies appear more frequently associated with starbursts than Seyfert 1s. On the other hand, if the AGN luminosity overwhelms that of the starburst, almost all clouds are ejected from the galaxy due to the radiation pressure from the AGN, resulting in the formation of a quasar-like object. The origin of obscuration of AGNs is discussed with relevant observations. Does the Radiative Avalanche Fueling Work in Any Active Galactic Nuclei ?
Recently Umemura, Fukue, & Mineshige (1997) proposed the radiative avalanche fueling to active galactic nuclei; gas accretion is driven by radiation drag exerted by stellar radiation from circumnuclear starburst regions. This mechanism is also interesting in terms of starburst-AGN connections. We therefore present observational tests for the radiative avalanche fueling. Our tests, however, show...
متن کاملFormation of Obscuring Walls by Radiation Force from Circumnuclear Starbursts and Implications for Starburst-active Galactic Nucleus Connection
We explore the formation of dusty gas walls induced by a circumnuclear starburst around an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We concentrate our attention on the role of the radiation force by a starburst as well as an AGN, where the effects of optical depth of dusty gas are taken into consideration. First, we solve the hydrostatic equations in spherical symmetry coupled with the frequency-dependen...

We report high-resolution imaging of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220 at 1.1, 1.6, and 2.22 mm with the Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrometer on the Hubble Space Telescope. The diffraction-limited images at 00.1–00.2 resolution clearly resolve both nuclei of the merging galaxy system and reveal for the first time a number of luminous star clusters in the circumnuclear envel...
متن کاملDust in active nuclei I . Evidence for “ anomalous ” properties
We present observational evidences that dust in the circumnuclear region of AGNs has different properties than in the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium. By comparing the reddening of optical and infrared broad lines and the X-ray absorbing column density we find that the EB−V/NH ratio is nearly always lower than Galactic by a factor ranging from ∼3 up to ∼100. Other observational results ind...
متن کاملSeyfert Galaxies with Circumnuclear/nuclear Starbursts
In this paper, we present our preliminary results on Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear/nuclear starburst(SB) activity. We have searched the recent available literature and found 76 active galaxies with clear evidence of nuclear SB activity, among which 16 are Seyfert 1s, 51 Seyfert 2s, and 9 LINERs. After studying the 51 Seyfert 2s, we find that those Seyfert 2s with hidden Seyfert 1 nuclei, ...
